Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
More trouble for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, after a 2013 audit revealed over $478,000 missing from a Veterans Canteen Service retail store located on VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System property in Michigan. The audit led to an investigation, which led to another shocking discovery.
According to the Detroit News:
A former federal employee admitted embezzling about $150,000 from a Veterans Affairs retail store and blowing the cash on strippers, prostitutes and gambling sprees, the Justice Department said Tuesday.
Glenn Alan Bates, 57, of Saline schemed to steal money from a VA retail store — or canteen — he managed in Ann Arbor, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
Bates had an extensive criminal record before working in the store, but was hired to manage it anyway.
This story comes on the heels of nine U.S. Senators (both Democrat and Republican), who are releasing a report detailing the problems in the VA and announcing legislation that would investigate all 56 branch offices.
Let’s hope we can shine a light on the problems that need to be fixed, because those who serve our country deserve the best, not bureaucracy and neglect- and certainly not theft.
