NJ Governor Murphy Under Fire Over COVID-19 Nursing Home Deaths

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

New Jersey Democrat Governor Phil Murphy is under fire over his controversial demand requiring nursing homes to accept COVID-19 patients.

As of last week, it’s reported 5,459 nursing home deaths happened in New Jersey due to the virus.

The Star-Ledger reports:

As of Friday, the coronavirus death toll for long-term-care facilities was 5,459. That’s about 53 percent of the state’s total Covid-19 fatalities.

In March, New Jersey’s health commissioner issued a mandate for nursing homes to accept confirmed COVID-19 patients.

New Jersey 101.5 reports:

On March 31, Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli issued a directive to long-term facilities that required them to accept residents discharged from hospitals that the hospital physician deemed to be medically stable. It said nursing homes couldn’t deny a person admission or readmission solely based on a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 and couldn’t test them for the virus.

The New Jersey State Senate is planning to hold hearings over the mandate imposed upon nursing homes.

Neighboring New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is also under fire over his reckless nursing home mandate during the COVID-19 outbreak.

It’s reported over 5,300 nursing home deaths happened in New York due to the virus.

During a COVID-19 press briefing in April, Cuomo was asked about New York State’s March 25 mandate requiring nursing home residents to be readmitted even though they tested positive.

The readmission policy said, “No resident shall be denied readmission or admission to the [nursing home] solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19,” according to Newsday.

Shockingly, Cuomo responded, “That’s a good question, I don’t know.”

Cuomo then looked to the health commissioner for a response who said, “if you are positive, you should be admitted back to a nursing home.”

Further jeopardizing the elderly population in nursing home facilities, Cuomo continued the mandate until May 10.

As a result, there are also calls for an investigation of Cuomo’s actions and New York’s nursing home deaths.

Governors Murphy and Cuomo highlight their gross inability to provide basic health safety measures for our most vulnerable, the elderly, and must be held accountable for the loss of lives that could have been avoided.
